Porsche's new V-8 engine will power Bentley, Audi models

Porsche will supply its new V-8 gasoline engine to parent Volkswagen Group’s Bentley and Audi brands from a new site near its 911 sports car plant in Stuttgart, Germany.

That will mean that the mechanical heart of the Bentley Mulsanne and Audi's revamped A8 flagship due next year will be built in Stuttgart.

“Porsche’s new engine plant will also contribute towards synergies within the Volkswagen Group,” Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said Friday, July 8, at the opening of the new factory.

The sports car maker invested nearly 80 million euros ($88.6 million) in the facility, where 400 workers are expected to build roughly 200 units of the fourth-generation engine every day, which will feature displacement on demand for the first time in a Porsche.

The 4.0-liter V-8 aluminum engine can deliver up to 542 hp at 6,000 rpm, but it already offers 335 hp at half that engine speed. Twin turbochargers are located centrally between the two opposing banks of cylinders as opposed to the outside to give the engine more compact dimensions and improve performance and handling.

Panamera Turbo

The powerplant will debut in the Panamera Turbo, which launches in early November. The Panamera Turbo can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds.

Despite its power, the engine is up to 30 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor thanks to its two-stage sliding camshaft that can deactivate four cylinders in partial load.

Porsche is also planning electrification of its engines. The current V-8 engines are built with a modular structure that would more easily encompass hybrid powertrains.

In the future the factory will also manufacture an electric drivetrain for the Mission E, Porsche’s first purpose-built electric sports car due at the end of the decade.

The carmaker is investing around 700 million euros in its production site in northern Stuttgart in the coming years, breaking up an investment logjam in which it had invested recently less than half that amount. In the future Porsche plans construction of a new paint shop and a separate assembly plant in Stuttgart.
